AT SHANGHAI
TENSE ATMOSPHERE ANTI JAPANF.SE CAMPAIGN ARRIVAL OF JAPANESE CRUISERS (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) (Received Ist September, 8.55 a.m.) SHANGHAI, 31st August. The intensification of the anti-Japanese boycott activities, including a campaign of bomb throwing, is creating apprehension. Two Japanese cruisers and four destroyers arrived this morning, but failed to allay anxiety. The Japanese naval landing party commander submitted a strong protest to the Mayor, Mr Wu Tehchen, against propaganda carried on in the Chinese press, demanding action to discontinue it, and adding that unless a favourable reply was received, a formal demand for the closure of the offending newspaper offices would be submitted.
In the meantime China is pinning her faith to the report of the Lytlon Commission, which held its last meeting prior to proceeding to Geneva. General indications from Japan are that the Lytton Commission can only report a fait accompli in Manchuria. MANCHURIAN REFUGEES TOKIO, 31st August. The Emperor has donated 40,000 yen to the Manchurian refugees' fund.
