TWO MINUTE CALL Owing to the radiant sun of the Midi the population of Marseilles is traditionally supposed to be addicted to somnolence. For this reason the invention of one of the clerks in the Department of Posts, Telegraphs and Telephones was first tried there. It is reported to have been successful, so Paris will now be awakened in the same way.
The invention is said to be - very simple; so is its operation. The night on which the heroic resolution to rise early on the morrow is taken, the subscriber warns the demoiselle at the nearest telephone exchange and at the appointed time there is a summons which' lasts for two minutes. This summons is the whole, secret of the invention ; it is an insistent and nerv'wracking buzz, at the cost of one franc, > When it was first installed in Marseilles. the subscribers pja.yed_ jokes on their lazy friends by registering their numbers as the opes to be called. This will not happen in Paris, for there when a call is turned in the operator confirms it immediately by ringing up the number given—no response, :no awakening. ", "U " 'J
