EMPIRE NAVAL DEFENCES
WARNING AGAINST INADEQUACY

Rear-Admiral Hyde uttered a warning regarding the inadequacy of the naval defences of the Empire. “I am convinced that we are damned unless wo wake up to what the sea means to us. If we do not recognise that it is the end of the. British Empire, and of our White Australia,” Admiral Hyde said. Siam bad 4800 naval officers and men, Chile 7660, and Australia 3100. At the close of the Napoleonic wars. Great Britain’s naval complement numbered 150,000. Now the naval force of the entire Empire was about 90,000.
