INVITATION TO HAMMOND
LONDON, 13th August. The “News-Chronicle” says that Hammond has not yet accepted the invitation to go to Australia Hammond refused to make a statement. INDIA V. SURREY LONDON, 13th. August. In a cricket match against the Indians, Surrey lost nine wickets for 364 runs (Allom 60, Whitfield, not out, 94 runs). LEYLAND, VERITY AND TATE (Received 15th August, 9.35 a.m.) LONDON, 14th August. Leyland, Verity and Tate have been invited to take part in the Australian tour. The remaining place will be filled later. (Received 15th August, 11.35 a.m.) LONDON, 14th August. The press unanimously approves of the choice of Leyland, Verity and Tate. “The Times” says: “It is a long time since a selection committee has been so immune from the taunts of amateur selectors. Each time the invitations are issued the team becomes stronger, until when it sails it will be an extremely powerful combination.” One critic points out that Leyland by his last six innings of 52 not out, 91, 153, 113, 45 and 166 (averaging 124), literally forced his way into the team. For some time he had experience of batting first with Sutcliffe, and thus the problem of the opening batsmen in Australia is virtually settled. The inclusion of Tate, it is generally agreed, will he welcomed both here and in Australia. Concerning Verity, it is suggested that it was imperative to include a slow left-handed spin bowler. The committee has apparently chosen a younger man in preference to White. It is suggested that Jupp is the best man for the last place, in order to replace Hobbs at eoverpoint.
