RANFURLY SHIELD MATCH TROPHY RETAINED BY CANTERBURY (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 13th August. Canterbury’s Rugby representatives beat South Canterbury by 11 points to 5 to-day in the firS't Ranfurly Shield challenge match of the season. However, the form of the winners was by no means up to Ranfurly Shield standard. The forwards were hard working, but the backs were disappointing, chiefly owing to lack of sharpness between the half hack and five eighths. Canterbury relied on the spoiling work of the forwards. There were 13 stoppages for minor injuries in the course of play.
BULLER DEFEAT WEST COAST
WESPORT, 13th August,
The return home-and-home match between Buller, Seddon Shield holders, and West Coast, resulted in an easy win for Buller by 27 points to nil. Although weather conditions were favourable for good football, neither team put up an impressive display, and the game was never very interesting to witness. Both sets of fonvaids played well, but the hacks of both winners and losers were very ordinary, and in this respect the Buller rearguard was very disappointing after the recent improved displays. In the first half Buller scored nine points, mainly through individual efforts; but in • tlie second spell they showed better form and rattled up 18 points. The Coast forwards were often dangerous in this half, but could not fin. ish off their movements. For the winners McNeight-. Gilsennan, Greer, Higgins, Stewart and Holder scored tries, four of which Holder' converted. Graham also kicked a penalty.
MIN FOR WANGANUI WANGANUI, This Day. The Wanganui Rughy representatives defeated Taranaki here on Saturday by ?A joints to 13. The- winners fielded a much faster team and displayed infinitely better combination in the backs and more life in the van, though in the tight play Taranaki played with their traditional virility. In the open, the advantage was always with Wanganui, and in the tight the honours were in favour of the losers. Bullock-Douglas scored 11 points of Wanganui’s total, kicking two penalties and one conversion and scoring a try. Lusk scored three tries for Taranaki, and Young converted two.
AUCKLAND TOURING TEAM
BEATEN BY SOUTHLAND
INVERCARGILL, 13th August
On a dry ground, and in bright sunshine, the Southland Rugby representatives defeated the Auckland touring team by 22 points to 8. Southland owe their victory to their battling forward pack. Auckland stood a fair chance up to the last half-hour, when their forwards were absolutely outclassed by Southland’s who dominated the game, and ran up points. The game was remarkable for the number of penalties awarded, mostly for scrum infringements. Had Southland taken full advantage of their opportunities, the score undoubtedly would have been much greater.
