TWO MEN CONVICTED AT
CHRISTCHURCH
(By Telegraph—Press Association)
CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. As the result of a confidence trick played last week on a country visitor to the races, John Robert Johnson (32), a hairdresser, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment and Charles Robinson alias Montague (23), a labourer, to three months’ imprisonment by the magistrate, Mr Mosley, on a charge of obtaining £ls by falsely representing that Johnson was Mcßae (a jockey) that Robinson’s name was McLean and he was part owner of Lupess, and that they were investing several hundred pounds on horses which the stable was backing. The police said complainant had parted with £37 in all. His statement showed what a mug he had been. Both accused said they had come from the North Island.
