SUCCESSFUL OPENING DAY The Y.M.C.A. Tennis Club bad a most successful opening day for the season last Saturday afternoon, when a large number of tennis players, club members, and’ visitors took the opportunity to play. The weather was perfect. The outlook for thei season is very promisingThe president, Mr E. B. Mabin made the opening speech, after which the first ball was sent over the net and the courts declared open. ; Tlie l president said that the club was to be congratulated oh its progress last year, when it not only greatly increased its membership but was successful in matches with most other clubs in town. Also a great number of enthusiastic club matches .wero played both in connection with the ladder and in the gold button competition. Two other achievements were that the club had been able to have its courts top-dressed, and also theV were to bo congratulated on having the biggest membership of any .club in Nelson last year. He felt that this would be maintained again this, season as a great deal of interest was being displayed in tho courts. Approximately 40 members were enrolled on Saturday afternoon, which is a good start, and this will enable a ladder competition to he put into operation practically right away.
