The Wimbledon tennis tournament opened in cool, cloudy weather. The courts are in perfect condition. The New Zealander Andrews put up a fine performance, defeating Brugnon in three straight sets. The Frenchman lacked' control and tired quickly. Andrews’ fast service and agile recoveries lrad him constantly in trouble. Brugnon made subtle use of the spin, but Andrews was too consistent. The results of tho first round singles included: Andrews beat Brugnon 6-4, 6-3, 6-3; Malfroy (New Zealand) beat Graves 6-1, 6-1, 8-6; Ilopman beat Nuthall 6-3, 6-1, 86; Sproule heat Freeman 6-4, 6-0, 6-2; Crawford beat Vinall 6-4, 6-4, 6-3 f Vines beat du Plaix 7-5, 6-3, 6-4; Borotra boat Merlin 0-6, 8-6, 1-6, 64, 6-2; Poke beat Landry 6-4, 6-4, 6-3: Austin beat Young 6-2, 9-7, 6-3; Maier beat do Kehrling 6-3, 7-5, 6-4; Ganderdower boat Crossley 6-0, 6-3, 6-0; Von Cramm beat Fyx.ee 6-4, 6-3, 6-1; Perry boat Jameson 6 3, 6-2; 6-4 Other winners were: Menzel, Klunschroth Satoh, Wood, Gregory, Miki, Boussus, Gentien* Cochet, Hughes and Clemenger.j
