WRECKED FERNDALE

VESSEL BELIEVED LOST (United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 17th June. The tanker British Sovereign struck the rocks while helping the Ferndalo and has been holed in the engine-room below the water line. The steamer British Commerce will tow her to Algiers.

It is believed that the Ferndale was in difficulties some time before she actually struck, as reports indicate that tho crew signalled for assistance prior to the vessel grounding. The cargo in the afterholds, which is undamaged, consists-of wool and’apples. The damaged cargo consists of meat, apples, skins, butter, and wool. ALGIERS, Bth June. The Ferndale is considered to be lost, but it is hoped to salvage most of her cargo. The wool is already being removed. VESSEL BREAKS IN TWO (Received 20th June, 12.25 p.m. LONDON, 19th June. The Ferndale broke in two at 6 o’clock this morning, the crew embarking in tlie boats. The captain, first officer and engineer remained aboard. The forward half of the ship settled down on the rocks and the after part remained afloat. Much of the cargo was salvaged. Fifty members of the crew were landed at Algiers and are being repatriated. THE BRITISH SOVEREIGN (Received 20th June, 8.45 a.m.) ALGIERS, 18th June. The British Sovereign, which reached port, is badly holed below the waterline.
