IF OTTAWA FAILS
INSOLVENCY OF FARMERS OF EMPIRE
STATEMENT BY SIR JAMES PARR (By Telegraph—Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, 18th June. “If the Ottawa Conference fails I envisage the insolvency of tlie farmers ot tlie Empire” was tlie statement made by Sir James Parr when addressing members of the women’s organisation of the Reform Party. “That may be a strong statement to make, but oil examination it will not be found to overstate the position. It must he obvious that we are at the parting of the ways.” The end of the Great War saw tlie launching of an economic war. a fight for markets. The market was the tiling to look to to-day and the only market for New Zealand was the Home market. “New Zealand has increased her production by 400 per cent, in 29 years, and is stilt increasing that production, even in times of what amount to bankrupt prices, such as the sheep farmer is receiving to-day. The British mind is attuned now to tiie position as was evidenced at the last elections, and we must go to Ottawa with the same spirit that Britain iias shown, not with any intention of bargaining for a “bob” or a penny, but prepared to give generously more in return. The Ottawa Conference will decide the economic fate of tlie British Empire.”
NEW ZEALAND DELEGATION HAWERA, This Day. The executive of the Federation of Taranaki Dairy Factories passed a resolution on Saturday urging that the Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates be included in the Ottawa delegation; also that tariff preference and a quote be sought for cheese. While admitting that the dominions are Britain’s only suppliers of cheese, the federation is of the opinion that the proposed quota and tariff for butter only may force foreign butter producing countries into cheese making in competition with New Zealand.
