GIFT BOOKS TO LIBRARIES
(To the Editor) Sir, —In a recent issue of “The Mail” reference is made to a valuable- gift of books having been presented to the ■ Baidal ha Carnegie Library by Mr 1). Slewart, of Richmond. It seems to me unfortunate that so many books should be I sent so far away. There should he ample room on the shelves of local libraries in general and Richmond in particular, for many hundreds of giftbooks. Most New Zealand cities ant? towns have received many rich gifts from local patriots. Might I suggest that for the future any public-spirited person desirous of giving gratis profit and pleasure to others that they will not forget local requirements.—l am, etc., “CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME.” Richmond, 16tli June. [ln the paragraph from the “Otago Daily Times” recording Mr Stewart’s gift it was mentioned that Mr Stewart was formerly resident in Balelutha, and it was under his aegis, when he was Mayor, that the Carnegie Library there was built.—Ed. “The Mail.”]
