Ilopman brilliantly defeated the American champion, Vines, 9-6, 6-2, 6-3. The Australian discovered that Vines thrived on speed, so he varied his pace cunningly. Vines showed surprising deficiency in trying to volley the Australian’s soft shots. Critics say that llopinan’s game was as fine as anything seen during the present season.
