ENGLISH GOVERNORS
A DEBATED QUESTION APPOINTMENT TO AUSTRALIA LONDON, 18th April. “In the past few years the question has been discussed in Australia whether any more Governors should be sent there from England. It speaks volumes for Sir John Goodwin’s work as Governor of Queensland that his successor should be bailed with such enthusiasm,” said the Secretary of State for the Dominions, Mr J. 11. Thomas, at the Royal Empire Society luncheon to the new Governor of Queensland, Sir Leslie Wilson, in supporting the toast of ‘‘The Guest.” Many representatives from Australia, India and other parts of the Empire l , noted soldiers and sportsmen, including D. R. Jardine, the famous international cricketer, attended the luncheon. Sir Weston Jarvis, who presided, had proposed the toast of the guest, and referred to the personality and tact shown by him as Chief Conservative Whip in the House of Commons. Mr Thomas said the presence of so many Indians was a tribute to Sir Leslie Wilson’s skill and popularity as Governor of Bombay during five difficult, years. Although difficulties were crop- ■ up in various parts of the Empire, he was confident that the outcome would be satisfactory. Indeed, probably there was no other nation which, in its heart ■of hearts, would not wish to change.-, places with Britain, even to-day.
