FIRST MEETING

(By Telegraph—Press Association) i WELLINGTON, This Day. . The first meeting of the newly-consti-tuted Unemployment Board was held at Parliament House, those present being the Minister of Labour, the Hon. S. G. Smith, chairman, .Mr Malcolm Fraser, Unemployment Commissioner, ami Messrs J. S. Jcssop and W. Bromley. Mr R.. Climic was unable to attend, but he will be present to-day. Preliminary business occupied members, who spent the greater part of the time in going through the provisions of the Unemployment Act and the amending Act of this session, as well as tho regulations, in order to acquaint themselves with tho law governing their activities. Various phases of the problem were outlined by the Minister, and members were 'given an insight into the work they will be called upon to do. . A full"board meeting was held this morning. STILL INCREASING UNEMPLOYMENT REGISTRATIONS WELLINGTON, This Day. Unemployment registrations for the week ended 3rd August total 48,396, an apparent increase of 624 compared with the previous week. Details (with dependents and without) are: -- Auckland 3054 and 3885; Wellington 2,487 and 2,378: Christchurch 3,203 and 1,894; Dunedin 1647 and 1227; Invercargill 837 and 405.
