MOTUEKA

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING A special peeling of the -Motueka Borough Ofoundil was held to discuss Iho foreman’s revised estimates in connection with the opening of the new quarry ou the Takaka Hills. Councillor Ft— voiced the opinion that, as a new councillor, lie would like further information regarding cost of establishing the quarry, especially in view of (lie fact that, as far its he could gather, the foreman’s report was the first and only detailed report that had come before the- Council. This statement was confirmed by the Mayor (Mr R. York). It was then resolved (Councillors Fry and Trnwavas) that consideration of the foreman's revised estimates for opening of the quarry he delayed until next ordinary meeting of the Council. On the motion of Councillors Ilulhert and Fry it was decided that the Nelson City Council he asked for AL’ Littlejohn’s services to confirm or otherwise the Borough foreman’s estimates; and to report in general on quarry matters, the report, if possible, to be furnished by the 6th July. The mover stated that, after giving further consideration to the quarry proposals he thought it advisable to obtain a report from an engineer before proceeding further with the work. Councillor Wrath, while supporting tho motion, expressed the hope that it would not hold up the establishing of the quarry, as metal was urgently required on the roads.

Tenders for supply of timber and iron work, etc., for the, quarry were considered and declined. Tho question of calling for further tenders was deferred. FOOTBALL Fixtures for Saturdav have been drawn as follows: Senior: Benefit Shield (to count as championship points), United v. Huia (Air Uoodyer). Tikaokao v. Wanderers (Mr Hogan). Junior: Ngalimoti v. Wanderers, at Ngatimoti (Air Clark). Tui v. Huia (Mr K. Holyoake). Tikaokao a bye. Third Class: Tikaokao v. Tui (Mr R. Gibson).

MOTUEKA GOLF CLUB LADIES V. MEN The match played between the Ladies and the men of the Motueka Golf Club created much interest. A total of 21 matches were played, making a record for the Club, the" ladies being successful in II matches, and winning by one up. It is significant that the low handicap men were not equal to the low handicap ladies, the medium handicaps were about equal, whilst in the higher handicaps the men were better. The-fol-lowing were the results: —Airs Smith beat F. Painter; Airs Agar heat L. Drogcmuller; Mrs Clark lost to F. Heath; Airs Goodman beat C. Thorp; Airs Thorp beat S: G. Smith; Mrs Jeffreys lost to A. JI. Cameron; Aliss Alorrison. lost to W. Stilwell; Aliss Whitehorn beat J. Clark; Mrs McCallum heat L. Green; Airs Rees lost to W. Deem; Mrs Heath lost to W. Agar; Aliss AlcCJarthy heat A. Wehley; Aliss Austin lost to J. Pocklington; Airs Batt lost to G. Stratford; Mrs Atkins heat W. George; Airs George heat G. Heath; Airs Mac Kay heat H. Buckeridge; Airs Cameron beat L. J. Mac Kay; Airs Edmiston lost to H. G. Johnston; Airs Wallace lost to P. McShane; Aliss Stratford lost to J. Rees.

CAPTAIN’S TROPHY During the coming weekend, the second round of the knock out competition (Captain’s Trophy) will be played. Cards will he received up to 5 p.m. on Monday.
