COMMUNITY WORK
SELF HELP ■. The casual observer touring the town on Saturday last might have come across two somewhat- strange sights, but on investigation they would have been found 10 be. connected. Ever, since the opening of Alt. Pleasant Avenue the residents have endeavoured to persuade the City Council to take over the access road leading from Russell street, but there have been several difficulties in the way and the legal position is that the residents concerned have to make their own arrangements for keeping the road in order. There are other means of access but they involve climbing steep hills and taking circuitous refutes and the private road in question is easily the most convenient and suitable. For the last two or three Saturday afternoons several of the residents have been engaged in repairing the road and filling in the worst of the ruts and holes and the work culminated in a grand finale on Saturday when, with the generous assistance of a resident- with a couple of motor trucks, the residents divided forces,, half going to the river bed where the trucks were loaded with metal and the other half remaining at the roadway to spread it. Although they were nearlv all .quite unaccustomed to ‘the work, splendid progress was made, with the result- that some 5 tons of ashes and 60 tons of metal have been placed oil the road which should ensure its being in reasonable condition for some time to come. \\ ith painful reminders of the work involved the residents are again approaching the Council with a view to getting the city to take the road over.
