HOSPITAL ANNEXE
DESTROYED IN COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATIONS
It is not often that the Fire Brigade is on the scene of a fire before it happens, but such was the case this morning when by arrangement the old wooden tuberculosis annexe and a shelter at the Nelson Hospital were burned under the supervision of the brigade. At 10.30 the building was lighted and helped by kerosene and set fires inside it was soon a mass of flames.
The fire attracted a considerable number of spectators, as the heat burst the roof tiles, making loud reports. Some of the chips were shot high into the air. The annexe, which was about 25 years old, had not been used for a. number of years, and was destroyed in compliance with.the requirements of the Health Department, as it was undesirable that men should work in it for demolition. At the present time the Hospital is employing a number of men under the No. 5 Unemployment Scheme and the- buildings were removed from a site which will be turned into a garden.
