APPLE TRADE
IMPROVEMENT IN ENGLAND KEEN DEMAND FOR COOKERS TASMANIAN FRUIT OF BETTER QUALITY (TJlited Press Association— By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 3rd May. The apple trade lias improved somewhat in the last few days, and though there are still large supplies of Americans available Australians met a good demand at rather better prices. The quality of the apples from all the States shows considerable improvement on the early arrivals of some previous years, especially as regards maturity and colour. This is particularly the case with Tasmanian, which are vastly better than in previous seasons. Apparently shippers have taken to heart the advice given last year and the results- are eminently satisfactory. It is noteworthy that Tasmanian cooking apples have been selling remarkably well, Alfristons fetching higher prices than dessert apples. This is due to the shortage of English cookers, notably the famous Bramley Seedling which are usually available till well on in the season. This year, however, supplies thereof are practically exhausted and consequently there is a great run on apples like Alfristons and Wellingtons.
