DAMAGE BY FIRE
FOUR SHOPS BURNT (By Telegraph—Press Association) WHAKATANE. 2nd May. A fire at Taneatua at 1.30 o’clock this mortiing destroyed four shops—G. C. Peebles, general storekeeper; E. M. Bryenton, butcher; McCall, saddler; and Mrs Sutherland, milliner. The contents of McCall’s and Sutherland’s shops were removed to safety. The buildings were valued at over £2OOO, and the contents of Peebles’ and Bryenton’s shops are estimated at £2OOO. Bryenton’s stock was not insured. BLAZE AT SHANNON LEVIN, This Day. A fire occurred at Shannon early on Sunday morning, two shops occupied by J. A. Roach, baker and King Lee fruiterer being destroyed. Considerable damage was also done to an adjoining shop occupied by H. Hook, tobacconist. The fire started in the living rooms at the rear of Hing Lee’s premises. ’ The insurances are: Roach’s, on the building £SOO. and on the contents £125; Hing Lee’s stock, £2OO.
