' NELSON JOCKEY CLUB KQZAN LEADS HOME IN SPRINT ATHOLSPEAR WINS GLEN MEMORIAL From a racing point of view the second day of the Nelson Jockey Club’s meeting held at Richmond Park on Saturday was most successful. Glorious weather conditions prevailed, the attendance was good, the track fast and the races provided a number of very close finishes. The chief event, the Redwood Memorial, resulted in a splendid race and an exciting finish in which Mr Corry’s Cessation prevailed by a narrow margin. In the Glen Memorial, won by Atholspear, the three placed horses crossed the line a head and a neck away from each other after-a great struggle in the straight. The most successful owner was Mr J. Corry, of Blenheim, whose horses won the first four gallops, Croupier. Johneen, Cessation and Kozan each putting a win to the credit of the stable which is controlled by T. George. L. G. Ellis rode the winners for the stable. Investments on the totalisator totalled £8631 10s, compared with £10,498 on the second day last vear. On the first day the amount invested was £5669, against £7493 last year, making the total for the meeting £14,300 10s, compared'with £17,991 last year, a decrease of £3690 10s. The organisation of the whole meeting went very smoothly and the races were run off very near to the scheduled time. During the three days’ racing the music'was supplied free to the Racing and Trotting Clubs by Mr C. Webley, who had fitted up , a series of amplifiers which allowed the gramophone and wireless items to be heard from all parts of the lawns. EASY FOR CROUPIER Valpine and Lady Laekham were scratched in the Trial Stakes, leaving eight starters of which Croupier on account of his good run in the Novices’ Handicap on Thursday was made a very short-priced horse on the machine. The two-year-old justified the public support, for L. Ellis jumped him out from the start and won all the way. Down the back Croupier led Invite, Black Ribbon, Earthquake, Shootist and Clamor with Peep last. On the turn Earthquake went up to second place and Peep made a fast run on the outside. Croupier led Earthquake into the straight from a bunched field, and the early pace-maker went on to win with great ease by a length from Peep, which hard ridden bv Wilson got up in time to beat Earthquake by a head.

NAROW WIN FOR ROYAL DRUSUS

Hakari was installed first choice in an even betting race in the Maitai Trot. Mabon’s Day was scratched. From the, start Eastern Queen took the lead from Arthur Chimes and Drift Wave, leaving a gap in the field to Royal Drusus, Hakari, Travis and Dan Roco. Running into the back Arthur Chimes led Drift Wave and Royal Drusus who had a break break on Hakari, Eastern Queen and Travis. On the far turn the order was Arthur Chimes, Royal Drusus, Hakari and Travis, and by the time the straight was reached Royal Drusus had taken the front position from Hakari, Travis and Arthur Chimes. Hakari caught Royal Drusus in the straight, but Royal Drusus, hard driven, came solidly at the end to win by a head. Travis was twelve lengths away in third place. An enquiry was held into the driving of Hakari by owner, F. G. Lynclp but the stewards accepted his explanation that a knee pad had become loose. FAST FINISH BY CESSATION Atholspear, Royal Game and Courtlike were scratched from the Redwood Memorial Handicap, of a mile, leaving a field of eight to contest the chief event of the day. First Raid was better backed than Noteworthy who carried a few more tickets than Cessation. From a snap start Rory Mor led Thursby, Cessation, Black Mint, Noteworthy, The Dove and First Raid. After covering a furlong The Dove had run up to second place behind Rory Mor, with Noteworthy, Black Mint and Cessation close up. There was no change in the order along the back. Rory Mor ran into the straight in front of Noteworthy, The Dove, Cessation, Black Mint and Thursby. In the run to the judge Cessation turned on a smart sprint to beat Rory Mor by half a length, with Black Mint two lengths away. First Raid, who got the worst of the start, made a run at the end into fourth place, and was followed past the post by Thursby. Noteworthy, Spearmiss and The Dove. Cessation got a much better run in the Memorial race than in the Cup on Thursday and her win was impressive.

CLOSE DANISH

All the acceptor’s except Dawn o’ Day went to the barrier in the President’s Hack Handicap of seven furlongs. The Sun was a warm favourite from Lady Rene and the Corry bracket Johneen —Landmark. Johneen was jumped out well by L. Ellis and was followed from the start by Ben Hur, Landmark, Lady Rene, Peep and Bold Archer. Across the top Bold Archer made a run into second place behind Johneen, and was followed by Landmark, Ben Hur, Peep, Lady Rene, Fallow and The Sun tailed off. Johneen maintained his position at the entrance to the straight, closely followed by Bold Archer, Dermod, Ben Hur, and Lady Rene. Lady Rene made a great run on the outside and passing the field got up in time to fight out the finish with Johneen who won by a neck from Lady Rene, who had a head’s advantage on Bold Archer. I The Sun again disappointed his many) followers by holding up the start, and j then tailing the field all the way. Bold ! Archer, carrying 111 b ovenveight, ran a splendid race into third place. KOZAN BEATS QUANTUM The chief sprint on the prop-amine, the Flying Handicap, saw a six horse field take part, Mr Corry’s Kozan being favourite, with Quantum and Full Crop next best backed. The Dove, Taku Tama, and Royal Game were scratched. From an even jump out Kozan went to the front from Full Crop, Quantum, Moorland, Booster and Coomassie. The order remained the same round thp bend where Kozan and Full Crop opened up two lengths from Quantum. On entering the straight Kozan went away from Full Crop, who was overhauled by Quail-1 turn. In the run to the post Kozan put; up a splendid performance to carry his 9.4 home in front and put the fourth win in succession to the credit of the Corry stable. Each winner was ridden by L. J. Ellis. VAN NEWTON IN FORM All the horses i’n the Wakatu Trot got away well except Van Newton, and; going past the stand the first time Le- j moro had three lengths from Teri Kingi; (second favourite), Chancellor Wilkes, | Royal Drusus, Dan Roco, Waipuki and ; Van Newton. The order running into l the back was the same with the field closing up. At five furlongs Teri Kingi joined Lemoro with Chancellor Wilkes, Royal Drusus, Dan Roco and Van Newton in that order, with the last-named making up ground. Lemoro led Dan Roco into the straight from Chancellor Wilkes, Royal Drusus and Teri Kingi. Van Newton ran wide round the field and beat everything in the straight to win by a length from Royal Drusus who was two lengths clear from Dan Roco who did not finish on. BASKIER LEADS HOME The Stoke Handicap five furlong scurry saw Dawn o’ Day jump away well and lead from Projection, Full Crop, Baskier, Little Thrush and White Doe. On the turn Baskier went to the

front with Little Thrush, Full Crop, Projection and Dawn o’ Day following. lOn straightening up for the run homo | Full Crop went into second place behind Baskier who went on to win by a length | from Full Crop with Projection a length further back. Little Thrush was fourth. ATHOLSPEAR’S FINE FINISH Atholspear, a winner on the first day, was made a warm favourite for the Glen I Memorial, the last event on the proI gramme, Make Up and First Raid being next fancied. Noteworthy, Quanj turn, Cessation, and Black Mint dropped out. leaving a field of nine. From the start Take Tama showed the way to I The Dove, Bold Archer and Muke Up. Along the back The Dove ran to the j front, acting as pacemaker .for Bold i Archer, Taku Tama, Make Up. First Raid, Royal Game and Atholspear until the straight was reached, and Gold Archer took the lead from The Dove, Make Up and First Raid. At this stage Atholspear was at the, back of the bunched field, but came away in the run to the judge to win by a length and three-quar-ters from Taku Tama, who was followed by First Raid half a length away.
