SUSPECTED OPIUM DEN
DETECTIVES DRAW BLANK (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND. 23rd February. It took four detectives working with a pick, a tomahawk, and a marhnspike an hour to break into a house in Grey street on Sunday night. When finally they entered all they found was a benzine tin, from which flames were leaping to the ceiling, and ten complacent Chinese. It is suspected that the premises were used as an opium den, but no arrests were made, presumably because the evidence was in the benzine tin. Thee occupants were apparently warned by secret bells. The doors were steel-lined, and triple-barred and padlocked.
