RELICS FROM THE DEEP

RAISING OF OCEAN FLOOR NAPIER, 19th February. Besides bringing the bones of the old ship Northumberland, which was wrecked on l’etane Beach on 10th May, 1587, into view, the raising of the floor of the ocean has revealed two office safes which disappeared mysteriously during a series of baffling burglaries several months ago. A weird collection of things, including yachts, launches and smaller boats, numbering nearly a hundred, has been left high arid dry; it will be a difficult task to get many of the craft to the water again, as the majority, although they once floated in sufficiently deep water to keep them well above the seabed at low tide, arc now separated from the nearest stretch of sea water by over half a mile of land. From these acres of mudbanks there arises a most objectionable smell, caused by myriads of decayed shellfish.
