IMPORT DOTIES?

MEETING BRITISH DEFICIT STATEMENT BY MR SNOWDEN SIGNIFICANT INFERENCE (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) LONDON, 17th February. Several newspaper lobbyists assert that Mr Snowden in the course of a 75 minutes’ address warned the Labour Party meeting that there might be a deficit in the forthcoming Budget of from £40,000.000 to £50,000,000. He said he was determined to prevent conditions arising which would land Britainin the position of other countries, whicii had five or six million unemployed. It is understood that Mr Snowden admitted that it was not proposed to increase direct taxation. Members of the Ministry are reported to have forecast that there would be no change either in the income or super tax, leaving the inference that there will he substantial increases in indirect taxation, in regard to which is recalled Mr Snowden’s admission at the Guildhall on 16th October last that he might have to outrage his strict financial principles.
