TOO MANY STOWAWAYS
ANXIOUS TO LEAVI; AUSTRALIA SHIPOWNERS TAKE ACTION (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copy right) (Received 3rd February, 11 a.m.) LONDON, 2nd February. Nine stowaways on the steamer Truherbert charged at Swansea pleaded guilty. Tho owners’ counsel said that it was understood that conditions in Australia were very bad, but the stowaway business was becoming such an intolerable nuisanco and oxpenso to shipowners that lie had been instructed to prosecute in every ease. Evidenco was given that tho men were discovered a day out from Western Australia. Tho captain put them to work. They gave no trouble throughout the trip. Each told a moving story of the conditions in Western Australia, They had tramped for hundreds of miles seeking work. Tho Magistrate sympathised with their plight and in consideration of the fact that they had worked and behaved weli he sentenced them to ten days’ imprisonment.
