FAILURE OF FORD’S SCHEME MILLIONS SPENT HOSTILITY OF NATIVES (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright) RIO DE JANEIRO, 2nd February. Brazil’s dream of the conquest of the Amazon jungles through the efficient exploitation of her rubber resources by Mr Henry Ford appear to have collapsed. Advices from Para, stale that Mr Ford, after spending millions, is unable to combat native antagonism to bis efficiency methods, and is giving up the experiment on the Tapajos river. The employees were recently reduced from 3000 to 200. Some Americans have resigned, while others have been assigned to an Australian post and are now in l’ara awaiting transportation. , Among tho methods to which the natives objected, it is understood, are punching a time clock, and standing in line for food. The eviction of former tenants as the clearing proceeded also led lo antagonisms. Late last year it was necessary lo send police by aeroplane from Bara to quell native rioters who marched on tho farm with pitchforks, guns, and farm implements.
