NELSON AUTOMOBILE ASSOCIATION
DRIVING AND RELIABILITY TRIAL Great interest is being displayed by members of the Nelson Automobile Association in the driving and reliability test to be held next Saturday afternoon. The object of the test is to provide a more or iess social outing for motorists, and at tho same time create interest in tests which give a guide to the driver's ability to control bis or her car. Hot water will be provided for afternoon tea at Thorpe. The route for the competition is from Nelson to Brightwater. through Wairoa Gorge, Wakefield, Dovedale, Orinoco. Rosedalo, Moutere and back to Nelson, finishing with a short test on a steep hill. Briefly the system is to allot a maximum number of marks for the whole test with deductions for various errors, such as arriving at the various controls before or after time. An observer will accompany each car and will report to the committee on completion of the run. From the number of entries already received there should be a good field for the first trial. A gross entry fee of 25s is being charged but there will be a refund of one pound to all entrants who actually compete, making the nett entrance to competitors only ss. The cars will start off from the Church Steps at 1 p.m., and at two minute intervals, tho competition being for the driver to get his car to Thorpe in a given time. The time limit provides for a low touring speed all the way. All traffic regulations must be complied with. There will be secret time checks, both on the in and the out trfns, who will take the time of passing a given spot in order to check the average speed. No trade cars or advertising schemes are allowed.
Tho hill test will consist of a stop and start on the hill, penalties in marks being imposed for running back and stalling.
