RICHMOND

BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Richmond Borough Council was held on Tuesday evening. There were present the Mayor (Mr H. Warren Kelly) in the chair, and Councillors Croucher, Haycock, Smallbone, Newport, Hill. Councillor Schroder was excused from attendance.

Before proceeding, on the motion of the Mayor, a vote of sympathy was accorded "to the relatives of the late Mr James Petrie, who had been a resident of the Borough for a great many years; also to Mr and Mrs R. Fanzelow in the recent decease of their son at Wakefield. Accounts totalling £l5O 13s 5d were passed for pavment. Correspondence.—The Main Highways Board forwarded a copy of the annual report, a voluminous document of twenty-eight pages, and it was received. The*Station Master in charge at Nelson notified that the porter in charge would be re-instated at Richmond at an early date. The letter was filed for reference The Nelson Methodist Bible Class wrote asking for the use of the Memorial Building for their camp at Easter. The matter is to be discussed at the next meeting. Several applications for grass in various parts of the Borough were read. The grass was allotted among the various applicants. The foreman was authorised to report to the Council if the grass was not cleared up satisfactorily. The lease of the Recreation ground having expired, it was resolved to lime and topdress 6 acres of the ground and to advertise for tenders for the lease for a further term. It was resolved that the offices close down from December 25th to January 4th, both days inclusive. The Town Clerk was granted leave till the 12th, January. _ ,• , Wednesday December 17th was decided upon as cleaning up day for the Borough.

FOREMAN'S REPORT

The foreman's report was read and received as follows: — . "The fence at the Recreation Ground has been removed, the ditch cleaned out, and also the ditch at the top. The tractor and grader have been worked on Gladstone and Salisbury roads. The concrete kerbing in Queen Street has been completed, the footpath filled in, rolled, and gravelled. The pot hobs in Lower Queen Street have been filled in with beach gravel. 18 yards of metal has been placed on Oxford Street and li on Beach Road. The following material was used for the footpath in Queen Street; 4i bags of cement, 4 yards of river gravel, yards filling. 6 yards stones have been carted into the Borough yard. . _^ The reservoir was overflowing on December 6th." Arising from the report the Mayor reported that the works committee had inspected Wilkes's new premises and the footpath along their frontage had been formed, this being part of a comprehensive scheme for a path along the northern side of Queen Street at some future date. , , , In reply to a question the foreman stated that lady drivers were the worst offenders in exceeding the speed limit, 'lorries being a good second.

RICHMOND SCHOOL COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETING

At the monthly meeting of the Richmond School Committee there were present Messrs A. Hunter, chairman, A. Croucher, D. Malloch, R. J. Polgaze, the secretary and headmaster. The Headmaster's report showed a roll number of 203 with an average attendance of 196.7. Very satisfactory results had been obtained in the passes for proficiency this year. The Chairman stated that a very encouraging response had been made in connection with prizes for the children, which would be presented at a break-up concert to be held in the Public Hall on December 18th. The Hon., H. Atmore had been asked to be present and to present the prizes. An invitation from the Directors of the Technical College to their annual exhibition was accepted several committeemen expressing their intention of being P In connection with the cleaning of the school, considerable discussion took place regarding the cost of this work and it was " ultimately decided that an effort be made to economise in this matter and that tenders for the work be called for the position of caretaker. The matter was left in the secretary's hands. _ After transacting other detailed business the meeting closed.
