FIRE AT ATAWHAI

NINE ROOMED HOUSE DESTROYED

A nine-roomed, two-storied, wooden dwelling owned by Mr C. Royds, of Takaka, and occupied by Mr H, F. McClune, headmaster of the Nelson Central School, was burned to the ground at midnight last night. The house was situated on the main road at Atawhai. Mr McClune, his four children, and a visitor, a child, were in the building at the time and all escaped in their night attirr, being unable to save anything. At Atawhai there are no water mains or fire-fighting appliances, and so the building burned furiously, unchecked. The building was fnsured for £SOO in the National office and foi"£2£o under a Norwich Union policy. The contents, belonging to the occupier, were insured for £2OO in the South British Tho Norwich Union also held covers oi £SO and £7O on outhouses and work-shop-garage respectively. These, however, were not destroyed.
