BUSHFELLING ACCIDENT
YOUNG MAN KILLED While engaged in a buslifelling contract on Mr C. Harvey's property at Anatimo (Takaka district) on Saturday afternoon Cornelius Liddy, aged 27, a single man, whose mother resides at Rakaia, met with a fatal accident. With two companions, Henry Edwards and Chas. F. Ingram, the deceased was working on Saturday afternoon, and at about 2.30 he was heard to be moaning. Edwards and Ingrain at once investigated, and found their companion pinned on a stump by a fallen tree. It was impossible to release the injured man until the tree was cut through. The accident occurred in very steep country. Mr Ingram at once set out in a dinghy to Mr Harvey's residence, 2J miles distant, for assistance, and returned with help and a stretcher.
The injured man was then conveyed •to the beach, this being the quickest way out. An endeavour was made to obtain a launch from Waitapu, but one was not available., Mr McXab, of Nelson, was communicated with and he proceeded to .Anatimo. Half-an-hour before he arrived, however, the injured man passed awayj The body was later brought to Nelson. An inquest was held at the Public Hospital this morning before the Coroner, Mr T. E. Maunsell. Constable Berthelsen conducted the inquiry. After the evidence of the deceased's companions had been taken, also that of Dr. Hudson, medical superintendent, who stated that the deceased could not have lived even if medical assistance had been forthcoming at the time, a verdict was returned that death was due to a fractured skull.
