RULE OF THE ROAD

As far back as one can trace there seems to have been some form of traffic control; and it is probable that the Romans were the first to instal some really definite rule. The reason why this 'rule differs in various countries is also obscure. Some people imagine that the United Kingdom is the only country in Europe where traffic keeps'to the left. This-is not so; in Italy, also, the left is the side used. There is, however, a difference. Either because the Italian policeman is not such a martinet as our own, or because the Italian does' not worry about such matters, it is a fact that traffic in Italy goes anywhere it wishes. Therefore, do not be surprised, if you are driving in an Italian city, to find yourself first on the left, then on the light, and again in the centre of the road.

The United States, France, Germany, and Belgium are among the many countries in which traffic is controlled on the right side of the road.
