THE CROCUS
The crocus is ono of the most charming and eagerly welcomed flowers of spring. It is associated with saffron. The Greek for crocus also means saffron. The saffron contained in the crocus is not only a valuable dye, but it is used in cookery. It is especially popular with the Cornish and Irish on account of its colour and flavour, and it much used in tho making of cakes. The yellow dye was mado from the stamens of the flower, gathored in the morning, The petals were thrown away; but the stamens were dried and used in cakes. An essenco distilled from tho crocus was also used as a perfume.
