STRANDED ALEXANDER

ANCHOR COMPANY CHARTER STEAMER GUNBAR

The Anchor Company stated to-day that there was nothing further to report regarding the steamer Alexander which ran aground at the French Pass early on Tuesday morning while on her way from Wellington to Nelson. The vessel is expected to float off within a few days on the milking tides. She will then proceed to Wellington for Government inspection before continuing her running. There is no damage to the hull apparent at present. The Anchor Shipping Company has chartered the Richardson Company’s steamer Gunbar, of 482 tons gross and 196 tons nett register, which will be employed in the Nelson-Mapua and Nelson-Motueka fruit trade. Mr W. Rogers, manager of the Anchor Company, is at present in Wellington in connection with the charter.

It is expected that the vessel will he available for the Nelson Company’s use on Saturday next. Captain McMillan, at present in command of the Nikau, will be transferred to the Gunbar, Captain O’Donnell of the Te Arolia taking command of the Nikau/ and Captain Huphan. chief officer of the Nikau, going on to the Te Arolia.

It is hoped that with the early refloating of the Alexander and the assistance of the Gunbar, the fruit industry,‘both local and export, will have an improved service.
