At Christchurch yesterday His Excellency the Governor-General presented, on behalf of His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught, Grand Prior and "the Chapter-General of the Venerable Order of St. John of Jerusalem, the following insignia: To John Becconsall, the badge of officer (brother); to Mrs Alice L. Bishop, the badge of officer (sister). —Press Association.

Mr A. McGavack, who some years ago was Conservator of State Forests at Nelson, has beer, appointed AssistantDirector of Forestry. Mr G. P. Aldridge, secretary of the New Zealand Boxing Association, is staying at the Masonic Hotel. He will attend a meeting of thosj interested in the reorganisation of the Nelson Boxing Association to-night and leaves for Blenheim on boxing business to-morrow. Mr G. P. Russell and Mr 11. Brough, of the Nelson Rugby Union, leave tonight for Wellington to attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union.

To-morrow, 10th April, Mrs Helen Anderson, of 94 Waimea road, will celebrate her 92nd birthday. She came to New Zealand in the Charlotte Jane, one of the first four ships that arrived at Lyttelton. Her father was printer for Mr J. E. Fitzgerald, who founded the "Lyttelton Times." With the exception of a visit to Australia and one to her native city, Oxford, England, Mrs Anderson has been a resident of Nelson since 1873. Many "old boys" of Nelson College will remember "Mam Andy" and her "Tuck Shop."

Mr Lewis V. Jcllyman, son of Mr John Jellyman, of Tahuna, has been successful in obtaining his chief engineer's certificate. Mr Jellyman, who served his apprenticeship at the Anchor Foundry at Port Nelson has since served on various overseas ships, also in New Zealand waters, and incidentally was third engineer on the ill-fated Manuka when she was wrecked on the Nuggets in December of last year.
