HON. W. B. TAVERNER

VISIT TO COLLEGE AND CAWTHRON INSTITUTE

This morning the Hon. W. B. Tavcrnor, Minister of Railways, accompanied by Mrs Taverner and the Mayor of Nelson, Mr W. J. Moffatt, visited the Boys' College and tho Cawthron Institute.

Mr F. Hamilton, chairman of the College Board of Governors, introduced tho Minister. He hoped when" matters concerning the College were discussed in Cabinet that Mr Taverner would give his practical sympathy. The Minister thanked Mr Hamilton for his welcome and expressed pleasure at having the opportunity of visiting the district. He referred to the splendid behaviour of tho students during the 1 earthquake period in June last when the College was badly damaged. A number j of pupils would soon be leaving school, he said, for a higher grade school or 1 into business life. He wished them to carry into the outside life their desire to uphold their school's high traditions. "Keep the mind fresh and clean and tackle the job that comes along," said Mr Taverner, "and you will be able to look back on your school days with pleasure." If the education the pupils were now receiving had the effect of only grafting a little on, it was of little use, but if it effected general development then something would be achieved. Unless the learning of different subjects in school gave ono the ability to think on straight lines when out in the world, the learning would not be of much use. The qualities that made a boy a successs at school were the same that made a success of a man in public life. After being shown over ihe College buildings by the principal, Mr €._ H. Broad, the Minister visited tho Cawthron Institute.

MINISTER'S PROGRAMME It was mentioned that the Minister should visit Golden Downs this afternoon but on account of the weather it has been decided to visit Motueka instead. Tomorrow Mr Taverner goes on to Reefton and Westport, receiving deputations there, and on the following day will cross to Canterbury where he will visit the Government plantations at Balmoral and Hamner before returning to Wellington next week
