LABOURERS' WAGES

•'To the Editor) . ; v . : Sir, —With your.permission I would like, through the columns of your paper, to enquire if the building contractors of Nelson are acting within their legal rights when they pay their labourers 13s Od per day. This state of affairs may seem incredible to a number of people who do not take an in* terest in local affairs, but I can. assure you that at least one local firm pays the sum of 13s tid per day to labourers. If those having contracts to let were to give preference to the firms paying a living wage to their men this rotten and debt-producing state of affairs would be alleviated. I am, etc., FATHER OF FORTY.
