EMPLOYMENT ON THE WHARF
(To the Editor)
Sir, —Allow me to endorse the views of "Pier" and "Scotch Jock" in the matter of the grievances of the Casualwatersiders on the waterfront at Nelson. I feel that there is little to be gained by further discussing the peculiar methods used by those employing labour on the wharf and now it rests with those higher in authority to seefair play and to see that preference be.' given those who have been constant" attenders and Avho have helped out over the slack periods when very often they have as "Pier" states, "only had two or three hours work a week." Tosay the very least, it is a wrong action' to give outsiders work instead of sons of om» own fair country. In conclusion, Sir, let me suggest that the labour foremen call the men together and ■give them numerical positions in ".s££ cordance with seniority. Another little" suggestion would be to have the folr * lowing proverb printed and posted,'at* various points round the/ wharf: ■ "Charity begins at home." :'.':.■'
I am, etc., PANAMA HARRY.
