SUPPRESSION Ob’ NAME REFUSED

(By Telegraph—-Special to "The Mail”)

CHRISTCHURCH, Lilli March

Tin' allil.udr. <>l‘ I li<‘ Al/igisl i.'il.o’s Com 1 ! in the millU>r of suppressing mimes "1 offenders whs commented on by Mr AlosIry, S.M., today in ;i case in which ii young iiiiiii liiid stolon £2O with which In pay for books necessary for Ida studios. "Tlioro is a young man who lias laid a good education. 110 has boon at ono of too best high schools in Now Zealand and lias a good roconnnondatioii from the rector of that school,” said the Magistrate, “lie has been engaged in study, and if he did not know better then be ought to have. If he bad been a boy whose, parents .could not give him the advantages lie has had then I. might have taken the request info serious consideration, but a young man like this must know that lie is bringing disgrace on his college, his parents, and himself, and though probation is a- form of punishment and a very strict form of punishment, too, there is another form of punishment that must be meted out to this young man. There is far too much of'this sort of thing going on in New Zealand, and one punishment is the punishment meted out by his fellows. The Court ought to be very careful to see that that punishment is meted old. I feel very sorry to have to decline the request in this ease, but I don t think I would lie doing my duty if I did suppress his name.” The case with which the Magistrate was dealing was that of Harold James Martin Toms (21), a student, who pleaded guilty to a charge of stealing £2O, the property of Charles King, at Timaru. Toms was convicted and placed on probation for two years.
