LATE RASPBERRY CROP

After a very wet January we are now experiencing some very warm weather. The raspberry crops in this valley were very late this year, and growers have only just finished picking. Some good crops are reported. Quite a number of new gardens have gone in, so that in a year or two largo quantities of berries should he sent from this beautiful valley. Tobacco harvesting is now in full swing. Quantities of the leaf are to he seen drying in the open, the weather being ideal for this. Growers should he able to get their crops cured without much mould this year.

- MINISTERIAL VISIT Quite an enjoyable afternoon was spent at the school on Friday last when the Hon. Harry- Atmore, Minister of Education, paid a visit. The chairman of the School Committee. Mr C. B. Brereton. introduced the Minister, remarking on the Honour that was being bestowed on the children 'and residents present by the presence of the Minister. The Minister then gave the children a most instructive address, telling them that he was interested in their welfare, and that although they were few in number, they were just as important to him as tne children in the larger centres. His remarks were well received, specially, when he suggested ■ that the committee should grant them a whole day holiday. Mr Smith, chairman Education Board, and Mr Thornton, ' secretary Education Board, were also in the party. After an enjoyable afternoon tea, Mr J. Sutcliffe, who is 84 years of age, gave the children a most interesting talk on the early history of Orinoco. This was listened to most attentively.

At tlie close Mr Brereton moved a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Sutcliffe for his very instructive address, and this was carried by much clapping.
