RICCARTON TRACK NOTES
NIGIITMARCH TO GO TO WINGATUI (By Telegraph—Special to "The Mail") CHRISTCHURCH, Ist February. Riccarton stables have a great record in Ihc Dunedin Champagne Stakes, and it is probable they will provide most of the interest in the approaching contest. Praise is an outstanding candidate in spite of her Auckland failure. Her November form at Riccarton was very good. Spoon has not won a race yet, but
Willi two seconds and two thirds in four starts she has shown some attractive form. Tray Bond is another with several placed performances, but her stamina is jn doubt. Limerick's brother, Dunraven, lias not realised expectations yet, but ho is certain to improve while Winsome Hind showed considerable promise in her two starts at Trentham. Praise lias incurred a 10111 penalty, and the extra weight will give some of her oppon cuts a chance. Master Clarence has been on the easy list since he returned from Trentham. He won in good style on the opening day but ho had the misfortune to bruise a foot, and this will prevent him from fulfilling early engagements. It is bad luck for bis connections, but later in the season ho will make ample amends. Nighlmarch continues to get through useful tasks, and is showing plenty of dash. So far he has not done anything beyond short sprints, but he is rapidly progressing towards good condition to lake on longer journeys. It is intended to scud him to Wingalui to contest the James llazlelt Gold Cup on the second day of the Dunedin Club's meeting. He will have to carry 9.10, inclusive of a 101 b penalty, but this will not be a serious task if he is at his best, as the best of his opponents have also earned penalties. After this race Nighlmarch will be sent to Sydney where he will take on the Australian cracks at Easter.
