HANDSOME DONATION

WELLINGTON, 30th January. At the time of the recent visit to New Zealand of Mr W. Sampson Handley, the well-known London surgeon and authority on cancer, it was announced that Mrs T. Dwan, of Wellington, had generously given £IOOO for cancer research. It is pleasing to be able to state that Mr and Mrs T. Dwan have now donated an additional £SOO to the Wellington division of the New Zealand branch of the British Empire Cancer Campaign. Mr and Mrs Dwan have also intimated to the president of the Cancer Campaign (Dr. J. S. Elliott) their intention to bequeath a sum of not less than £IO,OOO to the New Zealand branca of the campaign. The gift of £SOO will be placed to the credit of the fund which is to be raised in the Wellington district.
PRIME MINISTER'S APPRECIATION
The Prime Minister (the Right Hon. Sir Joseph Ward) has forwarded the following message from Rotorua: —"J have just heard with great pleasure of the very genorous donations which Mr and Mrs T. Dwan, of Wellington, have provided in connection with the British Empire Cancer Campaign. The recent gifts of £IOOO by them to the New Zealand movement, and of £SOO to the Wellington Centre, afforded evidence of their practical sympathy with the earnest efforts now being put in hand to deal with a very difficult problem'. "The further "intimation that Mr and Mrs Dwan will make provision for not less than an additional bequest of £lO,000 towards the fund in New Zealand is worthy of the whole-hearted gratitude of the" citizens of this Dominion, and I desire to express on behalf of the Government our keen appreciation of Mr and Mrs Dwan's public-spirited benevolence. Their action in this matter indeed affords a splendid example to those who have the means and the desire to contribute to come forward and generously support so worthy a cause, which aims at the alleviation of widespread suffering and the elimination of > a scourge whose increasing ravages give ground for serious anxiety not only in our own midst, but also in other countries of the world."
