ANTI-BRITISH FEELING

IN TRANSVAAL AND ORaNGE FREE STATE HON. W. 11. TRIGGS SHOCKED (By Telegraph—Press Association) WELLINGTON, This Day. The Hon. W. 11. Triggs and his wife have arrived from London by the Ruahine after an extended tour which included South Africa. Jfe took part in the inter-Parliamentary Conference in Berlin. The Hon. Mr Triggs expresses himself as shocked at the racial bitterness in South Africa and the distinctly antiBritish feeling shown by General Hertzog. The Government Treaty with Germany effectively debarred any further preference to Great Britain, and there was no disposition in official quarters to encourage either Britishmade goods, British immigration, or the investment of British capital. The anti-Imperial spirit was shown chiefly in Transvaal and Orange Free State and was strongly resented by Natal and Rhodesia which were thoroughly loyal to the Mother Country. MOTHER COUNTRY'S BURDENS (By Telegraph—PreßS Association) WELLINGTON. This Day. Interviewed, the Hon. Mr Triggs emphasised the tremendous handicap Britain is si niggling with in the load of Yieht she faces as the result of the war and debt settlements. Instead of being first as exporter she is now third, iAmerica and Germany being ahead of her. He was impressed with the advantages enjoyed by France and Germany in regard to loans through the depreciation of the franc and the mark. His desire v.as not to disparage these countries nor to criticise the MacDonald Government, but to impress on New Zealandors with all the earnestness in his power that the .Mother Country was labouring under great burdens and tliul t ef the terrific competition With which she is faced she needs more than ever the sympathy and active supIporl of every loyal member of the EmI pile.
