THE MAUI POMARE
DEPARTURE FOR ISLANDS (By Telegraph—Press Association) AUCKLAND, This Day. All difficulties attending the securing of a crew for the Maui Pomare were overcome and the vessel left for Niue Island and Samoa last ‘evening. Every precaution was taken before departure to see that there were no signs of infection among the members of the crew or the passengers. PORTION OF POLICE PARTY DETAINED (By Telegranh—Special t,o “The Mail”) AUCKLAND, This Day. Owing to their temperatures being slightly above normal seven of the police party of 18 detailed for Samoa were not permitted to travel on the Maui Pomare, under orders from the Health Department. The seven unlucky members were sent hack to the citv and will probably sail by the Tofua on. Saturday. A' special instruction from the Health Department at Wellington required the taking of temperatures of all on board, including passengers, before the boat sailed, as precautions had to be taken against the introduction of influenza to the islands at present. Police Superintendent Wohlmann said last evening that he was most surprised at the step taken. He had seen the. men taking farewell of their friends, and was not aware until much later of the turn of events. It was only after a debate lasting the whole of yesterdav morning that the staffing problem of the Maui Pomare was solved. In the face of a firm stand bv the union officials the authorities (Cook Islands Department) agreed to abandon a scheme by which they would have secured (he services of the European police on route to Samoa as stewards.
