NARROW ESCAPES FROM DEATH (By Telegraph—Press Association) WHANG ARE!, This Day. Mrs D. Rice, aged 19 years,' of Whangarei, a passenger from Opua, was seriously injured at the Mail - raihvav siding. The train gave a jerk and the woman, who had a year-old baby in one arm and a package in the othmwas thrown between a carriage and the platform and was dragged for some distance. She suffered a fracture of the thigh. The baby fell between the rails, but escaped injury by the moving train. At another crossing on the line the same train ran into a small car which had capsized after bolting down an incline owing to a defective brake. A man, woman, and child, who were the occupants, just managed to escape. The car was smashed to fragments. FATALITY ON OTAGO CENTRAL LINE DUNEDIN, This Day. Details concerning the death* of Charles Roy Trick, who lost his life as the result of a railway mishap on the Otago Central line during heavy rain on 19th March, were given this morning by witnesses who came forward at the adjourned inquest held before Mr Bartholomew, Coroner, who stated that, every care seemed to have been taken and that the crew of the train hacl proceeded with due circumspection. Absolute security could not be guaranteed, and all that could be done was to take reasonable precautions. He was satisfied that this had been done) The journey might have been safer in daylight, for some indication of the danger spot might have been given. The whole occurrence was purely accidental and he could only find that- deceased met his death through being crushed under an engine which was accidentally overturned through the track collapsing at Salisbury on 19th March.
