Sir Joseph Ward, speaking at the local Automobile Club’s social, gave some figures illustrating the development of the motor car in New Zealand. The total registrations on 31st March were 124,015 in the North Island, and 198,588 in the South. The number of new registrations in the last 12 months was 27,684. Imports of motor spirit had doubled in 10 years. • Motor cycles had increased from 1122 tc 3558. In passenger and freight services alone last November 2215 vehicles were used, employing 2950 persons, and carrying 1,982,220 passengers and 84,806 tons of goods. Sir Joseph Ward also mentioned that the Highways Board expenditure had increased from £37,226 in 1925 to nearly £2,000,000 last year. It now had a declared mileage of 10,139. Alluding to the formation of a separate board for the South Island, Sir Joseph said he was sure it would be welcomed in that part of New Zealand, and he remarked that it was good to let people have roads in their own territory.
