FRUIT CONTROL

(To tee Editor)

Sir, — I have read with interest tho letter on fruit control which appeared in last evening's "Mail." written by T. .1. M. Mackay. As Mr Mackiiy stales all .growers, are far too busy at present Id Sparc t'iiiie to reply to the unfair and would be misleading criticisms hurled ;d the Control Board ami its workings, t'.ttf Mr Eililn'r fruit{•rowers in general are wondering who was responsible for the article which was published in Tuesday's issue, condemning (lie Control Hoard entirely. Mi' Napier's reply to that .same article, which appears in your issue of last night should prove quite an able and sufficient answer for all loyal supporters of control. Well Mr Editor it will not cost any of us apple growers very much for medicine to cure headaches caused through trying to guess who wrote that article.'The Government are evidently up against control and unfortunately they have been most ably backed up by our own M.P. who by the way has given his whole hearted support to "vested interests," as against hundreds of his most loyal supporters, the big majority of the fruit growers of the Nelson province, men who have stood four-square with him in all his election campaigns for years past. Mr Atmore claims in justification of his attitude, towards control that the body is not exploiting the world's markets in the best interests of growers. Just why Mr Atmore should try to upset the smooth machine-Tike and efficient methods adopted by the Control Board iii marketing our produce is best known to himself. Fully ninety per cent, and probably more of the pip fruit growers throughout all those districts in New Zealand who are. under Control are more than satisfied to "carry on," Otago the only district of any importance outside Control are I understand seriously considering the question of "coming in." The whole tiling boiled down simply means that growers are not; wantiiiK to see "vested interests" getting their claws into the industry. I rt.ni etc., GROWER. Hope, 20th March.
