MAJESTIC—VAUDEVILLE AND PICTURES

Sam Stern, the Jewish comedian, and his bright partner, Sadie Pepper, whoso vaudeville act was so enthusiastically received at the Majestic on Saturday night, will make u reappearance in .conjunction with , to-night's programme. Their half hour's act on Saturday was an undoubted asset to the evening's entertainment, and the opportunity of seeing this inimitable' duo should not be missed. Both have excellent vaudeville and a wide range of patter and repartee at their command; added to which Mr Stern, shows himself to be a character actor and impersonator of no small ability. His command of facial contortion is at times startling in its reality to the subject which lie is impersonating, lip had no difficulty in taking the dual role of an old hag'in distress and a would-be helper, and gave a, splendid reproduction of the dialogue between the two characters. A cleverly constructed song mixture number made a good finish to the excellent vaudeville presented. Some entirely new numbers will be given to-night. In addition to the act the two star pictures to-night arc "Dressed to Kill," starring Mary Astor and Edmund Lowe, a new style'of underworld story with a splendid moral, and "Man, Woman and Son," featuring John Gilbert in the loading role, a dramatic masterpiece. EMPIRE THEATRE-SPECIAL HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

Owing to the immense suce'ess and popularity achieved by Sam Stern and Sadie Pepper at the Majestic on Saturday, it has been arranged for them to play at the Empire to-night as well as the" Majestic, in conjunction with a picture programme. REGENT THEATRE: TWO GREAT COMEDIES TONIGHT The management of the Regent presented two screamingly funny comedies on the new bill of fare presented for

the first time on Saturday and which . d'v.w a packed house. To-night again (the same programme will be screened,, Karl Dane'and George K. Arthur score I many laughs in. their new co-starring i comedy, "Brotherly Love," with its i penitentiary football game as the bigI gov lhan-ever scream. The great, comedy team outdistance their previous successes and bring to the screen new characterisations. The story is a broad satire on "reform" prisons where convicts are coddled so much :by an idealistic gaol governor that they fight to get ! in, but couldn't be bribed to leave.

ALLAN WILKIE SHAKESPEAREAN SEASON

The Allan Wilkie Shakespearean Company, now appearing at' Dunedin, will play at Nelson for a week, commencing" on Iflth May. Since his last tour of the Dominion Mr Allan Wilkie has re-inforced his company by the addition of a number of new artists. Miss Hunter-Watts, whose undoubted histrionic gifts have been acclaimed by the press of New Zealand, will appear in the leading female roles. Mr Alexander Marsh, who is a recent addition to the company, is a distinguished actor who for some considerable time was master of his own Shakespearean company at Home, and played leading parts, and also appeared with Sir Frank Benson. Another new member of Mr Wilkie's company is Miss Mildred Howard, an English actress with an extensive experience in Shakespearean productions. Miss Lorna Forbes and Mr Dennis Barry, who have previously toured the Dominion with Mr Wilkie, are still with t]ie company. The supporting company .numbers thirty performers.
