PERSONAL NOTES
The Mayor (Mr W. J. Moffatt) leaves Nelson to-morrow morning to attend the Municipal Conference at Wanganui, lie expects to be absent about a week. Wainui House visitors include :—Miss M. A. Taylor, London; Miss R. Hovey, Miss E. Hovey, England; Mr and Mrs 11. C. Mac Gibbon, Gore; Mr and Mrs W. Bridgman, Havelock North; Mr and Airs E. Ardrev, Mr and Mrs S. Brice, Wellington. Mr P. A. Herman, a director of N.Z. Picture Supplies Ltd., is at present in Nelson in connection with the opening of the Majestic Theatre. There passed away on 25th February at his son’s residence, Pongaroa, after a long illness, Mr Joseph Polglase, aged 83 years, reports the “Herald.” He came to Pahiatua over 39 years ago, together with his wife and ’ family, from Nelson, and started a nursery business in Short Road, Mangatainoka, until illiicalth compelled him to relinquish it. The deceased was connected with various public affairs in Pahiatua and Mangatainoka, being a member of the horticultural show, school committee, and Mangatainoka Domain Board, of which he was chairman for many years. The late Mr Polglase was a very old member of Court A.0.P., having been initiated over 55 years ago into the Court Robinhood at Nelson. He. was one of the early settlers of Nelson and went there when 9 years old. Born in Truro, Cornwall, lie was but a child when he left for Australia with his parents, his father working as a miner there. The deceased is survived by cue brother, Mr R. J. Polglase, Stanley Brook, Nelson, and one sister, Airs Tremewan, of Ashhurst. Ife leaves a widow, six sons, thirty-four grandchildren and eleven great-grandchild ren. The Rev. Father Galerne, S.AL, who lias been stationed in Nelson for the past two or three years, is shortly to be transferred to Hastings, Hawke s Bay. He will be succeeded here by the Rev. John Seymour, S.M.. who is a descendant of one of the oldest Nelson families. In Nelson he spent his boyhood, youth and early manhood. He is a younger brother of the newly appointed parish priest of Reefton and is being transferred to Nelson from the Timaru parish. For about six months recently he has been resident in Sydney, NewSouth Wales. The Rev. J. A. Jermyn, vicar of Holy Trinity Church, Greymuuth, who has been on a recuperative holiday after a lengthy illness. has resumed his duties. The Rev. D. C. Bates, who for the past three months has been relieving the Rev. J. A. Jermyn, returned to Wellington last week. Air Greenwood, agricultural instructor for Nelson and Marlborough. is resigning from the Department in order to take up a position with a private firm in the South.
