LINKING UP LINES
ORGANISATION COMMENCED STATEMENT BY HON. E. A. RANSOM WELLINGTON, This Day. .In connection with the Government’s decision to actively proceed with linking up tlje important main lines of the Dominion, the Public- Works Department has made definite progress in organising its big scheme. The Minister of Public Works, the Hon. E. A. Ransom, has been questioned on the subject. He said that in some cases it was only a question of providing more money, equipment and men for the works in progress. The number of men on the Stratford main trunk railway had been increased at both ends, and more men were being placed on the Napier-Wairoa section, while employees on the Westport-Inan-gahua section had also been increased in numbers, and there would be a further extension in this direction.
Referring to the South Island main trunk -line the Minister explained that a commencement had already been made on this work. There are to he some trial surveys on the southern end of the route before a permanent survey can be completed. All the field work has been done on the Wairoa-Gisborne section of the Na-pier-Gisborne line, full detail? having been secured regarding both the coastal and the inland routes. Survey work, the Minister stated which is needed for the continuation of the Westport-Inangahua line is to be put in hand shortly.
