WOMEN AND SPORT
A CONTROVERSIAL SUBJECT
Teloeraph— Special to "The Mail")
CHRISTCHURCH, Bth January. One of the controversial subjects of the day is woman’s participation ill sport, and the desirability or otherwise of woman engaging in more strenuous sporting pastimes has not yet been determined. The Canterbury Surf and Life Saving Association took up a firm stand in the matter when it decided to prohibit women entering in life saving competitions this season. Mr K. V. Bassett, on behalf of the Sumner club, which has a strong women’s section, moved that lady surfers be eligible for life saving competitions. Women had, he asserted, proved their right .to this concession by undergoing successfully the strenuous, test, fdr surf-medallions. The president, Mr C. A. Cooper, thought women could not be debarred from entering. Mr H. S. Feast contended that men surfers would not tolerate defeat in open competition by women'surfers. Mr C. Kite said medical opinion was that such strenuous sport as lifesaving was harmful to women participants. “Women are doing .everything nowadays, even swimming Cook Strait,” interjected a, member. The motion was defeated by a large majority.
