MT. ETNA ERUPTION

WORST OVER United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright Australian Press Association (Received 14th November, 10.10 a.m.) ROME, 13th November. Indications are, that Mt. Etna s worst is over, and it is, considered the final phase has been entered. THRILLING FLIGHT OVER CRATER

(Received 14t!i November, 1.25 p.m.) , ROME, 13th November. Professor Ponte had a thrilling flight over the crater and narrowly escaped disaster owing to the heat from the redhot lava. The aeroplane slipped into an air pocket, lurched and fell until it was only seventy feet from the inferno. The aviator, Lieutenant Zanelli, just managed to right the machine and fly clear.

As the result of Professor Ponte’s investigation experts are of opinion that the main conduit of tho crater is blocked, hence the eruptive violence by which the Java forced a way through the Tissues increased. The thickness of the lava streams, however, is now impeding the progress of tho f10w... Thus far tho lava emitted totals four hundred million cubic metres. Professor Zungali, secretary of the Fascist organisation, officially reports that -lie damage is £1,750,000.
